There was a dramatic scene in the Gloucester City Council when Councillor Einbling asked permission to bring into the council chamber a child whose illness had been diagnosed as smallpox. He declared: ‘ if the hospitals are going to be filled with cases like this you are going to damn Gloucester.” Councillor Embling referred to the qualifications of Dr Davison, who hail been summoned from Biriningliam to tight the' Gloucester epidemic. Dr Davison, a young man. rose up. He was very pale. He said : “If my qualifications are going to be attache ! I shall leave the city. Is Councillor Embling prepared to come with me to the isolation hospital and see some of the fearful sights in the wards there? The recollection of those sights will never be obliterated from my mind.” Councillor Embling persisted that Dr Davison should reply to the eritiesms made by Dr Hadwen. an anti-vaccina-tionist, whereupon Dr Davison gathered ut* liis papers ami emitted the Chain her, ‘saying that he would not stay in the city a moment longer. A deputation, headed by the Mayor, later found Dr Davison packing up at bis hotel, and persuaded him I<> stay. The small pox patients in hospital now number 150.
