MAILS TO WEST COAST.

THROUGH CAR SERVICE. (Per Press Association.) HOKITIKA, May 13. The Clements Motor Service made the Christohurch-Hokitika connection yesterday, sixty-four passengers travelling both ways. A large mail was brought through. The <ars ?re expected to make the through trip without the passengers iiaving to change from car to car today or to-morrow. This arrangement wiil considerably shorten the time occupied in the journey. A car will leave Christchurch tomorrow, at a m., making a through trip to Hokitika.

CONDITIONS AT KAIKOURA.

The District Health Officer, I>r Telford, visited Kaiapoi this morning and made a tour of inspection with the Mayor, Mr H. M’lntosh, and the chairman of the Health Committee, Dr Ramsay. A form of instruction on the liest methods of dealing with the after effects of the flood in houses will be circulated amongst residents of the flooded areas. All houses are now free from water, and people are busy drying them out THE KAIKOURA WIRES. It is expected that- all wires in Kz_ikcrura, .except telephone circuit wires, will be available by to-night. The Kaikoura telephone oircuit will rot be in use until next week, probably. To-morrow, however, Morse wires will be relieved from ordinary work, and the Post and Telegraph Deportment has arranged to u»e them in order to keep the Kaikoura telephone exchange open to-morrow, Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Business people end others may use the Kaikoura exchange to-morrow, but it will be out of order again on Monday.
