THE FLOODS.

THE SOUTH ROAD. STATE OF THE SELWYN. Latest advice concerning the opening of the South Road for traffic was contained in the following; telegram received from Leeston this morning by Mr J. S. Hawke*, secretary to the Canterbury Automobile Association : The Sclwyn is still flowing strongly through the broken embankment at Ellesmere Bridge. Until this embankment is built up again no traffic can pass north or south. Other communications have been received by the Automobile Association in response to Mr Haivkes’s request that information should be forwarded as to the state of the roads. The clerk to the South Rakaia Roed Board has written as under: —l am pleased to state that during the recent heavy rains our roads received no damage and our nu. n roads are in good condition, especially the Main South Road from the Rakaia Railway Bridge to Chertsey and Rakaia and to Barr Hill. We are very fortunate in not having a single washout. AMBER LEY. The Amberley Town Board advises that they have made all roads passable in their district. The washout on Lawc-ock’s Road has been attended to and cars cr cycles can now use the roadways. TAWERA COUNTY. The effect of the recent floods on the roads in the Tawera County has noc been very considerable, according to a letter received from the County Clerk. The main damage is the washing away of the approach to the Kowai Bridge above Springfield. The old ford is now quite impassable owing to a big washout in tlx-* cutting on the western side. All roads, with the exception of the West- Coast Road, are now passable. The approach to the Kowai Bridge is being restored ami if the weather keeps fine the bridge should be ready for daylight traffic in a few days’ time. The snow on Porter’s Pass is a serious obstacle. HINT FOR MOTORISTS. All motorists travelling to Ttangiora and Oxford are advised to take the road via Woodend.
