The men claim that they have been locked out, but the owners denj' this, and con tend that the pits are open for the men n* soon as they choose to start. They declare, however, that the “Red' element, which has been responsible for the frequent strikes of the past few years, must be got rid of. The secretary of the Northern Coal Owners’ Association states that there are only about eighty “Reds” ainon* the -whole To,ooo employees on the Northern field. The council of the Miners’ Federation meets on Tuesday next to discuss future action.
