The King and Queen inspected the Janiculum and Pineian Hills. Everywhere the Royal car was loudly cheered. The city was brilliantly illuminated at night. A gala dinner wa> given in the Quirir.al. The four sovereigns. princes, princesses, and leaders of Italian society were present. King George, replying to the toast or “ The British Guests,” which Kin..; Victor proposed, emphasised the tee! - ing of friendship with which Italians were regarded in all parts oi the Em pire. The sentiment which inspired British and Italian soldiers to fight side by side in the Crimea had found consummation in the crowning triumph of Vittoria Veneto. “ The Queen and I recall with pride. ' bo said. “ that our eldest son served in the inspiring companionship ot the Italian Army. T feel assured that no cloud can efface these memories, nor dim the lustre, of the ideals which the two nations share, and upon which de pends the forward march of civilisation.”
