CANTERBURY RUGBY .UNION. The Canterbury Rugby Union met last evening; present—Messrs A. Dey (chair, man), S. F. Wilson. E. Phillips, A. Duggan, G. P. Payne, \V. Maxwell, W. Britten, W. 18. Seed, R. Mr W ileciM*arrived lats. having been delayed at uhe New Zealand Cricket Council inquiry. A letter from the North Canterbury Club stated that G. Sorimshaw was now residing in Christchurch artd was therefore eligible to play for the club. With regard to Kempthovne and Lindsay, the club did not intend to play them i« the meantime. The letter was received. The colours of the Rangiora High School, green with gold ouffs and gold hoop, wore approved. A letter from the Susa no v School regarding entry into schools' football was referred to the Schools' Committee. Mr W. T. Evans wrote stating that in connection with the proposed competition amongst olube on the lines of the Peterson Shield in cricket, he would be. prepared to give a shield for such competiMr Wilson said it would be an excellent thing for the union to accept Mr Evans s offer and a shield given on such, lines would help to perpetuate the memory of a man who hod done a great deal for Rugby. On Mr Wilson's motion it was agreed to accept the effor and the committee decided to leave the naming of the shield to Messrs Wilson and Evans, with the unanimous suggestion that it be called the F. T. Evans Shield and that Mr Rvawe be thanked for his offer. Mr Wilson mentioned that Mr T. A. Fletcher, the Canterbury delegate on the New Zealand Rugby Union, bad offered to provide a cup for competition in the new competition being provided for primary schools. On the motion of Mr Wilson, seconded by Mr Payne, it was agreed to aoedpt Mr Fletcher’s offer and that be be written to and thanked. A letter from the Marist Bros Old Boys Association, through their secretary, Mr J. M. Caffay. relative to the alleged inequalities existing in primary school*' competitions. was received, ifc being stated that no such remark* bad been passed at any meeting oi the union. A letter was reoeived from the Manet Bros Old Bovs' Association protesting against the action of the referee in the fourth grade match between Manets and Albion in allowing a goal to Albion when the ball had touched an opposing play twin its flight. Mr M. O. Sinclair, the referee in question, wrote admitting t.he fact* as stated. A letter was also received from the Albion Club stating that the referee had stopped the match when a player waa injured and had therefore robbed the Albion team of a try. After a little dlacuteion Mr Britten moved that if the match hod any hearing on the competition or on the club cliwnpiesenip regarding total points, it be replayed at the *n<i of the *©**e-n. Mr Maxwell seconded the motion, which was carried- , , Mr T. Bain, referee in ifa« third grade match between Old Boys and Wharenui, reported having ordered off a prayer or each tide for fighting. The referee and tne player* concerned attended the meeting and the explanation of all three that they were not actually fighting was accepted, and it was decided on the motion of Mi- Payne, seconded by Mr Britton, that the players be cautioned. The chairman mentioned that the conference between the sub.unions committee of the union hud been postponed till to-day week on account of the floods. Permission was granted to Mariste, Wharenui B and Belfast to withdraw irom the third grade competition and Merivale B from the fifth grade. On the application of Mr Daws a Lmwood team was permitted to fill the breach in the fifth grade caused hv the retirement, of Merivale B. The chairman stated that- the committee arranging the schools competition would meet at 4.30 p.ra. on Thursday and would also meet the clubs at 7.30 p.m. the same day. _ „ In this connection the Rev 8. On behalf ol the competitions committee Mr Britten said the Kaiapoi Club wanted a senior match, at Kaiapoi as early as possible. It wsu» decided to leave the matter in thehands of the competitions committee to bring forward a recommendoMr Davis brought up the matter of the travelling expenses of lower grade teams to Kaiapoi and Rangiora. Last Saturday had cost the Lin wood Club five gnineas in this respect. The letter was referred to the finance committee for their report. Mr Pavne made a request for the names of trams to be forwarded for publication in the "Guide " not later than Thursday. It was decided to bring the matter before the club delegates. Mr MPhail stated that the training hall in Hagiey Park North would be available to the clubs this week. On the motion of Mr Payne it wae decided to hold a function in connection with the official opening of the training hall. Mr Davis mentioned that the benefit concert for the widow of the late G. Dixon, a member of the Lin wood Club, had been postponed, on account of the wet weather, from Sunday last till Sunday next. On behalf of the delegates who attended the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union, Mr M'Gully presented an extensive report for which he received a hearty vote of thanks.
