SWIMMING.
MEETING OF CANTERBURY CENTRE. A meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last evening, Mr ii. a. Williams presiding. The chairman said he would like to congratulate the East Christchurch Club, winners of the senior polo championship, and the United Club, winners of the junior championship. Mr H. 8. Batchelor reported that at recent polo matches no officials had been appointed. Tie considered that this was not fair. The chairman said that the matter rested with the water polo committees. Mr .S. White said that only two or three clubs took an interest in this department. To his mind the water polo matches were a farce. The secretary of the Royal Lite Saving Society wrote suggesting alterations to the Condition* of the Sir John Hail Shield competition. The matter was left to the chairman, with power to act. A letter was received from the secretary of the Addington Club with reference to the disqualification of a certa n swimmer (Hancock) in the s©.vd« farewell handicap at the Addington Club's carnival. A let t«r was enclosed from Hancock's father, protesting against the race being reswum an£ hi* sort being disallowed to start. ft was stated than Hancock had been di*fluaHfied for starting before his time, apd that a r***wi.m bad been ordered over an incident which had occurred daring the race. It was decided to uphold the referee's decision With reference to Olvmpie representation it was decided that it bo a recommendation to the council that any money suiyoribed by swimming bodies should he earmarked to cover the expenses of swimynlng representative* in the first instance, a,nr balance to be handed over to the general fund. ft was decided that the centre’s dolegnf* to the council be aaljteri to obtain the council's assistant-© in getting permission. tb-ronpfc the Education Department, to foster »wimsa4nß in schools.
