(a) Introduced by Suchting against Schlechter at Carlsbad Tourney, 1911. (b) Schlechter played Q B 2 to prevent B (c) Good; it threatens B B 4, preventing Black freeing his game by Kt Q-2. followed by P K 4. (d) Gaining time by threatening Q x Kt. White handles the opening splendidly. (e) White's position is ho overwhelming that he can afford to sacrifice. (f) Deeper than appears on surface. If now. 13 Kt x P ; 14 B x Kt, Q x B; 15 B x P ch. K x 816 Q Kt 3, mate. A beautiful possibility. (g) To make room for the K in case Whita tries the variation in' previous note. Black would have done better to play 13 Kt Kt 2, whereupon Wfiite replies P B 5. The check allows White’s Kt to get to Q 6. (h) Not 17 Kt B 5 ch, for then Black can safely reply B x Kt.
