TRANSPORT PROBLEM.
SERVICES INTERRUPTED. Service cars were not able to get through to Kaikoura, the road being impassable beyond Waikuku. in view ot this no cars leit for Haunter Springs. On the north railway line trains are running only as iar as Kaiapoi. Springstou is the present terminus on the Southbridge line, and on the AlnCiand line Springfield is the farthest point to which the service can be carried. It is possible that the service to Rangiora may be resumed early, but the position is indefinite. The Oxford and Ey reton branches were not operating todav. It is likely that the services to Arthur’s Pass and Southbridge will not be resumed this week. it is impossible tor the Department to make any progress until the flood waters recede. A number of slips have been reported on the Midland line, and bridges will also require examination and, in some cases, repairs. The train from Methven got through to Christchurch this morning, although the line was flooded in places.
THE MAILS.
Mails were got through to Rangiora this morning, having been dispatcher to Kaiapoi by train and them** taken by car to Rangiora. On the Southbridge line mails went only as iar as Springston, and on the Midland line only to Springfield,. No mails were dispatched for the West Coast to day, and they will be sent to Wellington to night for dispatch via Nelson, Glenhope and Inangahua
TELEGRAPH LINES,
Telegraphic communication with Wellington direct was available on one kev' this morning, and efforts were being made to improve this. Kaikoura was isolated, having been cut off both from Christchurch and Wellington. It will be some days, probably, before wires will bo in order again
