Bishop "Welldon, speaking in favour af taxing betting at the convocation of York, said:—“My view is that there is no difference between a Stock Exchange transaction and a bet. Don’t let us confound practices which become sinful if carried to excess with practices sinful in themselves. It would estrange all the more moderate churchmen to suggest that it was sinful to have a glass of beer or wine, or to make a bet, however small.”
