LOCAL ELECTIONS.

HARBOUR BOARD. The count of the first preferences in the Harbour Board eelction was completed last evening and a start was | made with the distribution of preferences. The total valid votes were 16.526, giving a quota of 3306. 'Hie informal votes totalled 1645. Commenting on the fact that the number of votes cast in the Harbour Board election was appreciably smaller than the total cast in the Hospital Board election, the deputy returning officer (Mr A. -Freeman) stated to-day that the explanation wag that more interest was taken in the Hospital Board than in the Harbour Board, especially by women. Many people, though receiving their papers for the Harbour Board election, did not bother to vote. The total valid votes cast in the Hospital Board election was 17,082. which gave a quota of 1899. The informal votes totalled 1565. A start'was made this morning counting the Hospital Board papers. In this ease, as in the case of the Harbour Board, it is not expected that the count will be protracted.
