BRIDGE OF REMEMBRANCE.

SUGGESTIONS BY DR , THACKER. Thanks to the retiring Mayor (Dr H. T. Thacker) for his work and support in connection with the erection

of the Bridge of Remembrance over the Avon were expressed to-day by Mr J. Wyn Irwin, secretary of the committee. Mr Irwin said the committee highly appreciated all that Dr Thacker had done and the assistance lie had given to the project while Mayor of the city. The committee also wished that he should convey its Thanks to Mrs Thacker for the interest she had displayed in the bridge ?nd the help the had always been willing to give. in reply, Dr Thacker made ..a number of suggestions for improving the surroundings of the bridge. He said the overhead wires at that point should be altered, that- the shop at> the corner frf Durham and Cashel Streets should be rebuilt and the corner rounded, and that the traffic pole in Cashel Street should be replaced by something more artistic in the shape of a piece of statuary. On the Cambridge Terrace side of the bridge, the Oitv Council should acquire the vacant section on the right hand side and turn it into a beauty spot. The main entrance to the King Edward Barracks could be retained, but part of the footpath should be dug up and climbing plants put in to cover the brick walls. On the south side of the roadway, residents should be requested to remove high fences and improve their gardens. At the point where Cashel Street ran into Rolleston . Avenue, there should be direct entrance into the gardens and a track made along the river for slow traffic, admission being controlled, if necessary, by ticket. If the supporters of the Memorial Column still persisted in their project and if they were unable to secure a site in the Square, it would be a good idea to erect it at 'be junction of Rolleston Avenue and Cashel Street, where it could be seen from the bridge If those proposals were put into effect, the whole surroundings would be in keeping with the bridge. Mr Irwin raid be would have pleasure in placing the proposals made before his committee.
