THE MELBOURNE CUP.

CULLING THE ENTRANTS. By Tel^arraph—Pres* Asp^cintion—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received May 2. 9.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 2. The Victoria Racing Club lias raised its sweepstake for starters in the Melbourne Cup to £75. Last year the Melbourne Cup stake was 10,000 sovs, added to a sweepstake of 50 sovs, and the race attracted thirty-three starters. The increase in the sweepstake is designed to reduce the size of the field, by crowding out some of the horses with only remote prospects of success.
