COUNTING COUNCIL VOTES. ! A commencement wae made by the ! staff of the deputy returning officer or Saturday morning to count the first preference votes cast in the City Council election. The scrutiny ;»t the rolls was completed on Friday evening. On the accuracy of the counting of the first preferences the successful transference of the surpluses later will depend, and. to guard against any possibility of error the first count will he checked three time*. It will then be potisitie for the quota to be worked out.
! The recount of the first preference j rotes for councillors was completed on Saturday evening when it was found that the total valid votes cast was 17.601. The official quota was then determined to be 1036. To-day the task of transferring preference is being undertaken.
