PROGRESSIVE PAPANUI

AT WORK AND PLAY. EARLY DAYS. | The first train to reach Papanui j was on April 29, 1872. I Mr Frank Sisson gives the following I particulars:—The line was surveyed in I ’6B. and the flags put through in ’7O or ’7l. I remember that the surveyors put a flag at the front door of one house and the other flag at the back door, the line to go right through the centre of the house. Afterwards the house was shifted. When the first train went through, the schoolmaster, Air Fleming, took all the school children down to the station, and we sang, “God Save the Queen” and cheered. Foracre was stationmaster and Wells porter, at least, if not actually the first, they were in charge soon aftei. MEMORIAL TOWN HALL OPENING Although the weather was unpleasant, it did not spoil the opening ceremony. The ladies who were responsible for the success of the afternoon tea -were:—Mrs Blair (supervisor), Airs Ghas. Smith (honorary secretary), Mesdames Hart, Barnard, Uren. A. Pearce. Ives, J. Pearce, Cook, M’Cuilough, Blackmore, Ford. Woodhara. Hawke, Taylor, Coleman and Alisa M. Pearce. Other helpers were : Mesdames Hookham. Church, R. Bell. Wade, King, G. Large lemon chrysanthemums interspersed with palms pleased the eye. At the head table sat the relatives of the fallen men of the district and the various speakers. During the afternoon the Papanui orchestra- gave several selections tinder the baton of Air Wade. At the instance of Airs Blair the flowers used in the decorations were afterwards sent ever to Rannerdale Home. The boys could not be present on account of the weather. Airs Blair and the committee wish to thank all those who so generously gave broad, cakes, and donations towards the afternoon tea. OP ENING FOOTB ALL Al A TCHES. On Papanui Domain the Waimairi Juniors met Hornby, and won bv twenty-two to nil. The game was last and interesting although the ball was slippery, and the game was left to the forwards. Tries were scored by D. Ros-sit-er (2), G. Hern. E. Pearce, K. Bailey and APDonald. and two converted by W. Smith and J. Armstrong. Rossi ter owes his success to his fast following-up. “ Dug ” is a solid proposition'among the forwards. D. Hern fa last year’s third grade player) was a great success as half. W. Smith is good and safe in a tight corner. K. Bailey, who retired injured in the second half, played a hard game and E. Pearce was prominent at times. Air •J. Young was referee. The third grade met Central at Richmond Park, and played a good game, the forwards especially. P. Smith. Lange and Poulsen being prominent. The backs tackled well. Taking the

team all through, the members are to be congratulated on their fine showing against a more experienced team. Although defeated by three point*, this team can, if they pull together, win most of their matches. The form displayed by the local teams must be largely attributed to the training in the club rooms under Mr S- Kruze. town hall opening ball. The opening ball will take place next Thursday evening.
