SAFE BLOWN OPEN.
A COUNTRY ESCAPADE. (Per Press Association.) THAMES, April 11. Richard Henry Farrands and Thomas Joseph Leo Meagher were charged before Mr Salmon, S.M., with burglary at the W liarepoa Store, owned by Valentine. It was stated that the owner left the store on Thursday, March 29, and on returning on Friday found the windows broken and the safe missing. The safe was recovered at the quarry at Hukutaia. Both of the doors had been blown open, and £l2 taken. Sergeant Macdonell gave evidence as to finding the safe. He said that Farrands had voluntarily made a statement that he drove from Waihi in a trap with a mate to Wharepoa, where they removed the safe, blew it open, took the cash, and drove back to "Waihi. Meagher had also signed a Both of the accused, when arrested, were strongly under the influence of liquor, and Meagher was on rhe verge of delirium tremens.
The Magistrate committed the accused tor trial. Bail was allowed in their own recognisances of £2OO and two sureties of £IOO.
