SWIMMING.

CANTERBURY CENTRE. The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association met last night. Mr H. S. Williams presiding. The x\ew Zealand Association wrote stating, in reference to an appeal by the l tilted Club against a decision oi the centre, that it wa necessary for the centre to appoint- officials to permit of attempts on records being made. Mr H. S. Batchelor said that an appeal had been lodged with the council, and that body hart siren a decision without hearing any evidence from the centre. ill J. Toomey said he had put the position before the council, and the chairman had ruled that the centre was in duty bound to appoint officers when anybody was attempting records. The Town Clerk wrote stating that the Baths Committee of the City Council had granted the use of the Tepid Baths to the centre for the Harris carnival on April 19. The New Zealand Association advised that. Mre D. Henry had been granted reinstatement as an amateur swimmer and that the East Ashburton Club had been granted affiliation. The Wellington Cenlre advised that, it did not think Easter was a suitable lime for the Norden Cup inter-provincial contest, and it would nave to lapse this year. ” We sincerely trust that suitable arrangements can be made for next and succeeding seasons. Mr Atkinson moved that the Centre write to the council and give therb every assio representatives to the next Olympic games The chairman thought that the Centre should look further than swimming. A thoroughly representative athletic teem should be sent away, but if the. Swimming Council made a n.ove it would awaken Muother bodies. In any case, funds -were Mr L. Annand said that a permanent Olympic fund should be started, and then the council would have noney to work on. not only for 1924. but in ihe future years. Mr Atkii son’s motion was carried.
