MINIMUM WAGE AT HOME. By Telegraph—Press Association-—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received March 9, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 8. The House ol Commons debated Dr Salter's (Labour) private member’s motion urging the Government to proceed without delay with the Bill introduced in 1919 constituting a Commission to inquire into the legal minimum rates of wages. He said: "We are getting back to the level of wages in 1834.’’ The principle of the minimum wage woe in active operation in Australia and New Zealand and elsewhere. Major A. Boyd Carpenter. (Parliamentary secretary to Ministry of Labour), replying, said that a national minimum wage had been tried and had proved a failure. It had been turned down by the Trade Unions Congress. The Boards of Trade were already fulfilling the functions which the members opposite had asked for. .Sir Arthur Henderson said that the Labour Party was not asking for a fla.t rate national minimum wage, but for minimum time rates, which were a very different thing. The motion was negatived by 189 votes to 176.
