THE KING’S PRIZE.

WON BY LOVEDAY. (Per Press Association.) TBENTHAM. March 7. After a dull, drizzling: morning, during which the Hawke's Bay Match was fired in adverse conditions, the sun came out shortly before midday and the afternoon was fine, hut a treacherous ** head fishtail ” proved disastrous t-o men in the King's Match. The Hawke's Bay Match was won by Gillick with the good score of -17. Some of the leaders, including •Fames. West- and Masefield fell badly, the last, named two disappearing from sight. West got only 12 at 200yds. The North Island versus South Island match, twenty men aside, seven shots each at 300. 500 and 600yds was keenly contested. but • North proved victorious by 1779 points to 3703. The scoring was not so good as itwas two years ago. when South won by 1831 to 1811). The reshuffling of aspirants for the Belt having been completed, it was found that ten over-niglit leaders had gone by the hoard and eleven others crept, up, two —A. Green and W. Feist—having to fire off for fiftieth place. Green won. The men went down to fire at three • o'clock. A strong sun a.nd passing clouds made a troublesome, shifting light and a head fish-tail of considerable strength blew in most disconcerting fashion. it. took fifty minutes to finish te:i shot?. Croxton, who practically was tlie last to finish, had a heavy passage. Starting with a miss for a sighter he got- on 2. 4. 0. •>. 2, 5. 2, 3. 5, 4—32. Meantime his club-mate. Butler. had finished with 39 made up (after his sighter), of 2, I, 5. 3. 5. 5. t. 3,3, 5. and Croxton with his last shot had to get, a magpie to tie him or an inner to gain second place to L. G. Loveday. who had pushed ahead Quickly and rattled on 5. 4. 3. 4. 3. 3. 4. 3. 4. 5 —38: placing him in an impregnable* position SO far as the Belt was e-mcernctl. Croxton took a long time and there was suspense after he loosed off. the target seeming to hang uncertainly, hut gradually it. went down and a spotter came up a 1. All these performances were warmly applauded by a, fairly large gathering of the public, as well as riflemen, who remained, like Bindle, to “ see it through.” C. Whitemail, who was leading when the match started, got 3 for a sighter. hut his business shots read 2, 4. 0. 0, 0. 0. 2, 1. 2. 2---16, a most heartbreaking score, but there were worse. Paynter. for instance, after getting 3 for a sighter never found the target again. Butler’s score of 39 being the best at the range he takes the Rifle Challenge Cup. while the Grand Aggregate gold modal for best Bcore in all individual service and belt matches went to G. Hood (Opaki) with 724. The Bisley Aggregate for best total in the long ranges of the Belt, series, was won by Butler, ’.75. with R. J. King (Opaki) runner-up. 171. Collins acting in place of the Minister of Defence. The Mayor of Wellington, Mr R. A. Wright, was present.
