CRUISER WELCOMED AT AUCKLAND. -* ' ~ (Pm Pres» Association.) AUCKLAND, January 15. A civic reception was accorded Admiral Gilly, liis officers and members of the French mission, who arrived on the cruiser Jules Michelet. The Hon C. J. Parr represented tho Government, dwelling in an interesting manner on the important part tho French played in the early life of New Zealand. In responding the Admiral spoke of his pleasure in visiting the Dominion, saying: “ France will ever revere the memory of the Anzacs and the gallant deeds of those of your dead who lio at rest beneath our soil. It is a friendship forged in the iires of adversity anil sealed with the blood of the dead. I am very glad to have the opportunity of visiting you and am proud to be charged with bringing you the greetings of all the people of France " Ho trusted the mission would draw closer the bonds of trade relationship and cement the friendly bonds already established. In the evening a citizens’ At Home was held in honour of the visitors. One of the most attractive features about the .Jules Michelet denotes the purpose of its cruise in the South Pacific. Tins is a fine photographic exhibit of manv of the most beautiful manufactures of France. Tt is contained in a panelled showcase. and comprises about three hundred coloured photographs illustrative of a very comprehensive range of French goods, including exquisite lace, tapestry, jewellery, lingerie arid daintv fabrications d«‘ Franchise. This salon has commanded admiration at exhibitions in Paris. New York. Chicago and Philadelphia.
