RAIN IN THE CITY.

A STEADY DOWNPOUR. A considerable amount of rain fell in the city over the week-end, and continued to-day. {Sunday was hue alter rain on Saturday night, but at an early hour this morning heavy ram set in from the south-west. it ceased for some hours, permitting the people to get to work dry, but by 10.30 o’clock had again set in and continues throughout the forenoon with some severity. Townsfolk will welcome the rain, which will do much good to kitchen gardens and lawns, but farmers will not regard it with so friendly an eye in view of the possible damage it may do to standing crops. Bright weather is needed for the wheat crops, in which dampness may induce mildew. Lp to noon to-day 0.23 S inch of rain had been recorded at the observatory. At Lyttelton steady rain set in about 10 a.m. and was still falling at noon. Work on the waterfront was stopped. The rain is welcomed in Lyttelton, •where the water supply was running short. DOWNPOUR AT BLENHEIM. I DAMAGE REPORTED. (Per Press Association.) BLENHEIM, January 15. ~Heavy rain was experienced in Blenheim and throughout the district last night and of an extraordinary character in Pieton. Considerable damage has been reported in and around the town. The sudden flooding of the Waitohi undermined the bank at the rear of the railway workshops and a portion of: the smithy was engulfed. The stieam was bank high this morning. .A small slip on the railway line at Elevation was quickly cleared and a washout near Mount Pleasant did not interfere with the traffic on the road. ..The traffic between Blenheim and Elctou was blocked and the road was under water.
