GOLD IN CENTRAL OTAGO.
BIG SCHEME PLANNED. (Per Press Association-.) DUNEDIN, January 15. A big scheme is reported to lie in hand to recover gold from the Kawarau, River, Central Otago. It is proposed to dam the river at the fa.lLs. shutting off the stream for eighty days in the year from where the Kawarau leaves Lake Wakatipu at Frankt.on and joins the Cluthn River, distance of twirty-two miles. The full rights have been applied foi' over the whole length. Tt is estimated that 2000 men will find employment on the works. Tt is* also estimated that thousands of ounces arc hidden in crevices and holes in the river bottom which will he exposed. Many parties have pegged claims.
