ATHLETICS. Tho requirements of some more suitable ground as a track for the training of athletes was brought under the notice of a “ Star ” representative in i he course of a conversation with a person who is particularly interested in athletics. He said that at /present there were a number of first-class runners in training at Lyttelton for tho St Patrick’s sports meeting, to be held ;n March at Lancaster Park. One of the lads, won his heat at last year’s meeting and there were at least three i;i training who showed great promise. Not being in a position to avail themselves of any other ground they were ‘orced to make use of the reclamation ground at Officer Point which was as t.ard as concrete and totally unsuitable •or training. If only the council could see its way to harrow some 75 or 100 vards, or even water the .track, it would if nothing better could be undertaken. No doubt if the council were approached by those concerned some assistance would lie given. Some time igo the council 1 had given a local horse trainer permission to train horses on the reclamation ground and, in return for the use of the trade, the owner of lhe horses offered to lay down a 100yds ash track for the use nf the school chililion and others who wished to train. However, lie had not fulfilled his promise*. The training of trotters on the reclamation ground had since been stopped owing to the owner or owners having sold and removed their stables from Lyttelton and the damage that had been still done remained. It was «*p to the council to see that it was compensated or the promise kept.
