At the Herrin massacre trial at Marian. witnesses for the defence testified that Otis Clark, one of the defendants. urged the mob not to use violence upon the .captured white guards. They declared that he said that if they were killed it would, be the worst thing that, ever happened to the United Mine Workers of America, and that he would in no way participate in an attack upon the guards. Four State witnesses have received warnings to retract their testimony, under the threat of death.
