Hays') lias announced the extension of the mail subsidy contract with the Oceanic Steamship Company, providing for a subvention of 22.532 dollars for each monthly sailing to Australia. The arrangement will be effective from the expiration of the six months’ contract concluded last July, but no definite period for its continuance is fixed. The Oceanic Company last May requested a two years’ contract at the rate of four dollars per statute mile, declaring that ii had suffered a 60.000 dollar loss in 1921. This the Postmaster-General declined. but a temporary compromise was reached for 22.000 dollars monthly. The nevfest arrangement has been made in anticipation of the fiual settlement of the ship subsidy issue. If the Subsidy Bill passes through Congress, the Postmaster-General will seek the transport of mails on a poundage basis.
