TO-DAY’S CASES. CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdouson. fi.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Two statutory first offenders were each lined 10s, in default twenty-four hours imprisonment. HE HAD A COUPLE. “J had a couple of drinks given to me by the barman.” said William Flowcll a vigorous old man aged 7S years, who pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk while in charge of a horse and vehicle. The defendant was surprised when lie was further charged with procuring liquor during the currency of a Prohibition Order. He pleaded guilty to this charge also, but said lie was under the impression that the order had run out. Sub-Inspector J. K. Simpson said that the defendant had a good many convictions against him for the same offences. in appealing for another chance the defendant said he iiad been in New Zealand tl(> years and had always done his best. He was fined £3 in default fourteen days’ imprisonment on the first charge, and for breach of the order he was fined IDs in default seven days’ imprisonment. Fourteen days was allowed in which to pay the fine. REMANDED. Harold Frederick Saxon Charlswortli, .was charged with failing to provide adequate maintenance for hif»* eight-year-old daughter in Auckland. The police applied for a remand to Auckland which the accused opposed, saying that he had done all he could and had never made any attempt to avoid his responsibilities. For some time ho had been out of work, but he was now making an attempt to start in engineering and would he sitting shortly for an examination in Wellington, and he asked that an order should he made in Christchurch. The Magistrate said that this could not he done and the accused was remanded to appear at Auckland on Friday. MAINTENANCE. Amos Muliingon was ordered to pay j.()s a week maintenance for each of his two illegitimate children.
