SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE.
COMPLETE IN 1930. “ Trains and motor cars ought to b* running over the North Shore Bridge early in 1930.” declared the chief engineer, Mr Bradfield, in Sydney last week. 'Penders for the bridge close next September, and now that the Bridge Bill is passed tenderers are expected to have no qualms in submitting quotations. Whether the cantilever or arch type will finally be chosen cannot be decided until tenders are received. At the earliest, said Mr Bradfield, no tender could well bo accepted before March, 1924. because the most careful checking and examination of quotations and specifications would first have to be made. Clause 28 of the specifications for tho bridge states:—“ The contractor must undertake to complete the work within seven years from the date of notification of acceptance of tender, subject to any extension of time which may he granted by the Minister on . the recommendation of the chief engineer.’’ j Mr Bradfield thinks the work will be completed long before the seven years mentioned. Probably it will be done in five. Therefore, with a tender accepted, say. in March. the bridge ought to be completed earlv in 1930. The St James’s section of the city railway ought to be finished in two years’ time. Other sections w’ill onlv just have been started by then. There is every probability of a commence ment being made on the Wynyard Square and eastern suburbs sections next year.
