(Special Jo the ‘‘Star.’*) GKEYMOUTH. September 25. OBITUARIES. The death took place about midnight on Saturday of Mr Walter Irving, perhaps the oldest and best known resident of the Inangaliua/ district. The deceased had been in indifferent- health for some time and about- ten days ago took an unfavourable turn and gradually grew weaker. The deceased gentleman was born in Cumberland and erui-g.TT'-cl s-, -:i early ate, first to Vanoouver and then to New Zealand. On arrival here he to Reef ton via the Grey Valley, crossing the luangahua at the junction of its two branches. Since 1866 lie lias been a prominent figure in local politics, becoming a member of the Inangahua County Council at its inception. For some considerable time be occupied a seat at the council table and was county chairman on several occasions. He was a member of the Greymouth Harbour Board and for clone on twenty years was secretary of the Reefton Jockey C’lub but resigned that position about two years ago. In the early days the deceased was a noted wrestler and won several trophies. The late Mr Irving always took a keen interest in athletics as well os in racing. In the latter sport he ran the horses " Liberator” and “Geraint” in conjunction with several other Reefton horses and later the; gelding ’‘ .Slaiden.” who won several races. The late Mr Trying was predeceased by his wife some years ago and is survived by five sons. Thomas and John (Reefton), Joseph (Marten) and Edwin and Robert (Hokitika), and one daughter, Mrs H. Hindmarsh (Reefton). The deceased was in his eightieth year. Ihe interment will take place on Tuesday. The tragic death of Mr James Sara at Westport caused a sensation in Reefton. The deceased was tor a long time a resident at Black’s Point and was a member of the Inangahua Silver Band. He was a splendid slide trombone player and was successful in many local and other competitions. Early this morning the death occurred at the Grey River Hospital of Mr Deceased was the son of a well-known flourmiller and farmer of Bryndwvr (Wales), and arrived in New Zealand in. 187*1 Alter following the occupation of farmer at Oanja.ru for fifteen .years he came to the West Const where he was* engaged in goldmining and sluicing. lie also prospected for gold at Waiuta and worked on tho Midland railway. An old resident of Greymouth, Airs T. Polling, died on Saturday evening at her residence in Cooper Street. She was a native of Ireland and was sixtyfour years of age. She arrived at Greymouth about forty-six years- ago. She lias been in ill-health for the past three years. The late Mrs Polling leaves a husband and one son -Henry—to mourn their loss. GENET* AL On Saturday afternoon members of the Reefton Bowling Club assembled at the green to farewell their Into secretary. Mr P Cohen, who left lor Christchurch to-day. The president. Mr V. Mori, in making a presentation of an inscribed solid silver cigarette case., said lie regretted Air Cohen's departure from Reefton. where he had been of great assistance to the Bowling Club. The club's present good financial position was practically due to his energy and ability. Constable Fisher on Friday arrested James Arthur Hind Rust-on, the Westport Coal Company’s night watchman at J>enniston. on a charge of breaking and entering the storeroom of an hotel at Penniston.
