HOME MARKETS MORE STABLE. RISE IN COTTON. The chief item of interest in the soft goods trade at present is the reported upward tendency of cotton. Although tho Home market is in a more stable position than it has been for a considerable period at the same time it is not in such a condition as to give overseas buyers full confidence, in placing anything but orders for goods which they actually require, stated a representative of a leading house this morning. From advices received it is possible that the rise in cotton will be maintained and even might advance further, though some connected with the trade are a little sceptical of tlie movement in this direction, and inclined to regard it os meant to stampede them into further buying. Super merino wool, Avhich is used in the manufacture of .some of the finest materials, is selling at high prices on tho London market. Speaking with regard to summer goods one firm’s representative stated that, manufacturers in Great Britain were making great strides both in quality and value, as compared with those that existed during the AA'ar and he was confident they would maintain their high position. “ The Germans are still sending out propaganda and advertising their goods, but this is not affecting traders in the Dominion. There is no doubt that in the Old Country German competition, unless checked will do a considerable amount of harm. It is in the interests of New Zealand that trade with Great Britain should be favoured as much a.s possible.
