HOSPITAL BOARD.

TO-DAY’S MEETINC. The North Canterbury Hospital Board met to-day; present—Messrs H. E. Otley (In the chair), S. Andrew, D. M'Rae, W. E. Dudley, W. P. Silencer, D. M'Millan, H. Patterson. M. Beth ell, G. Armstrong, H. H. Holland, J. Sttorry, A. T. Smith, F. Jlorrell, Hon It. Moore, M.L.0., Dr P. C. Fenwick, Rev, J. K. Archer, Mrs A. E. Herbert and Mrs S. Page. The Hospital Committee reported that the average daily number of patients in hospital during July was 320.’ In the venereal diseases' department there were 445 attendances, representing 108 patients, 31 of whom were new. The committee urged the board to make further representations with regard to the issue of the necessary authority for the health patrol under the Social Hygiene Act, 1917. The Finance and Hospital Committees reported %hat a meeting was held to make inquiry into a request made by Mr F. E. Langran for some financial consideration owing to the fact, that ho had left the board's service on account of his condition of health, which, he alleged, was probably caused through accidents which oocurred to him in the course of his duties. After hearing the statement by Mr Langran, and the evidence of several officers of the board, it had been decided to recommend that Mr Langran be granted a compassionate- allowance of £SO. The Public Health Committee reported that the plans for the open air home for children were under consideration, and on the suggestion of Dr Blackmore it had been decided that the shelters at the east end should be in two floors. The Finance Committee reported with regard to the Leeston Hospital, that the chairman of the committee, Messrs Otley, Paterson. Smith, Storry and Dr Fenwick had visited Leeston for the purpose of inspecting a site for the proposed hospital. The area of land in question, about four acres, was situated a few chains to the north of the Ellesmere County Council Office. It. appeared to be dry, had a northerly asQect. and was fairly sheltered on the south by trees, and there was a good fall for drainage purposes. The committee agreed that, in the event of it being decided to erect the hospital, the site submit teed for inspection would be very desirable. The board was recommended to inform the Ellesmere County JC'ouncil that the proposal to erect a matertiity home at Leeston would be favourably considered if the residents agreed to contribute in a similar proportion to that which had been done in other districts where maternity institutions have been erected. The report was adopted.
