Winslow, after a conference wit.i President Harding, introduced a Bill to create a fact-finding coal commission of nine members and tbe terms are in accordance with the Presidential recommendation that no Congressman interested in coal should be allowed to serve. The commission’s tenure of ofSoe is one vear and the expenditure ri limited to 500,000 dollars. It will investigate the ownership of the mines, prices of coal, wages wage contracts and the profits of mine operators and coal distributors. The commission will report and.make recommendations by the new year. Senator Borah telegraphed the railway executives and strike leaders, urging both sides to hasten a settlement to avoid losses of perishable crop?. Ha pointed out there was pending a- car shortage to mote fruit and vegetables in the agricultural districts of the West which will suffer considerable losses unless these crops are moved io eastern markets. The president of the Federation of Labour. Mr Samuel Gompers, has appealed to organised labour urging the fullest moral and financial support to the striking railway shopmen and stating that the resistance of the railways had been strengthened because power ful forces were seeking to crush* trade unions. The appeal stated that the future of organised labour depended on the outcome of the strike. The strikers were endeavouring to secure a living wage for the maintenance of an American standard of living, reasonable working conditions and the right of organisation.
