EARTHQUAKE.
The earthquake was felt in Christchurch at 12.49 a.m. It lasted for several seconds. A resident of Christ church who was awake at the time states that it was accompanied by > distinct noise, but whether this was due to the creaking of timbers or had a closer connection with the earthquake he could not say.
