CAWTHRON INSTITUTE.
PRAISED BY MAJOR BELCHER. (Per Press Association.) NELSON, July 7. Asked by a ‘ Aiail ” reporter to give his impressions of the Cawtbron Institute. Alajor Belcher’, of the British Empire Exhibition Alission, said: “ 1 have spent one, of the most interesting mornings since leaving England. 1 think that the scope of the work as well us tho actual work being carried out is perhaps the most important scientific contribution in relation to plant life in the whole of Australasia. Dr Titlyard in the entomological section and Dr Curtis in the mycological section are themselves engaged in forms of research which may have the most far-reaching conclusion, from a commercial point of view, in the eradication of orchard diseases throughout New Zealand. 1 have visited various research farms, which are carrying out purely agricultural work, such as one in Victoria is carrying out. but I have seen no institute which is carrying out the same research work in relation to orchards, and 1 don’t know ii we have anything in England like it of the same type. The result of this research work ought really to be shown in the Empire diseases section of the exhibition, and will be, L hope. The exhibition itself ought to be made the occasion of an Imperial conference, in order that the work being done in Nelson can become known in other parts of the Empire, where fruit is an important commercial problem. 1 can only hope." added Alajor Belcher in conclusion, “ that the example of Air Cawtbron will he followed by some other New Zealand benefactors.”
