The total imports of butter into the United Kingdom for the month ending April SO was 369.000 < wt. as compared with 271.000 cwt for the corresponding period of last year. Cheese.—Market quiet. POULTRY MARKET. Messrs J. B. Merrett and Co. report a pxod entry of poultry to-day. There was a keen demand for all classes of prime birds, and bidding was brisk. Table chickens brought os fid to 14s 9d, hens 3s to Oh fid, clucks 4s fid to 12s 3d. pullets 5s fid ♦o 18s, geese 6s to 7s. turkeys 11b fid to 2 s 6d, all per pair. EGG MARKET. The listings for th,e week showed a slight increase, due to the production from young i took. Tire demand was good and the Canterbury Egg Circle pool this week was the highest for the South Island, being 2s lOd firsts, 2s 8d seconds, and 2s lOd ducks. Mr P. Cannon has been appointed managing director of United Motor Service, Ltd., Kaikoura. Sir Joseph Mnrd and Lady Word, who are visiting relatives in Christchurch, will leave to-night for thenhome at Henetaunga. At the Teachers’ Conference (Wellington) Mr F. de Kerry (Wanganui) asked if the institute was aware that in Wellington, Auckland, and Canterbury districts young certificated teachers were walking the streets without employment, after having undergone training at the training colleges. Mr Kidson (Wellington) pointed out that everyone of these certificated trainees was entitled to employment if any positions wero held by uncertificated teachers. If trained teachers, out of employment, applied for positions he’d by uncertificated teachers, the uncertificated teacher would have to get out. The matter was jeferred to the executive for investigation.
