MOSTLY ABOUT MODES.

(By MRS. GORDON-STABLES.) CONCERNING CROCHET. The hands that were formerly so assiduously engaged, on the knitting of frocks and jumpers are likely to be equally occupied now with the crochet hook, for rumour hath it that tho crocheted garment is to take the place of the hand-knitted one in all smart wardrobes. The crochet dress has a distinct advantage over that which is knitted, in that .t is far easier to manipulate gussets and modify widths, while the lacier and more open effect is infinitely more becoming to the average figure than the more solid regularity of “purl and plain.’’ Exceedingly attractive are the dresses crocheted in the new artificial silk with the speckled effects. In this silk are to be found. for instance, black speckled in white, banana speckled in blown, and blue speckled in beige. The effect of the frock is greatly enhanced if when completed, if. is lined with chiffon in the same tone as the prevailing tint, the whole being worn over a silk slip to match. lor the ordinary “ stock size figure eight hanks of the silk should be sufficient, provided flu* pattern be a fairly light one. As the price of artificial silk has considerably decreased of late, tho gown that is crocheted at home works out very economically in spite of the fact that more material is needed than in the case of the knitted frock. A good many dressmakers nowadays prefer their clients to wear corsets of their own selection, so that it is tactful to consult the fitter

before placing one’s order with the corsetiere. THE VOGUE FOR BRONZE. The bronze shoes that the elegante began to. wear in rather tentative

fashion last- year have now definitely established themselves in the affections of the smart and are much in evidence just now in conjunction with toilettes of all descriptions, both of the indoor and outdoor variety. Indeed, bronze effects are much in favour, beads of irridescent bronze being lavishly used as trimming on some of the latest

frocks and wraps. Embroidered on to charmeuse and marocain of different shades of brown and. rust-colour these beads have the happiest effects, the pretty play of light on their surface giving a charming variety to the design. Pretty ornaments of burnished bronze appear on some of/ the newest hats, holding up the edge bf a brim to the crown or pinning into position an ostrich tip-
