FIRES.
SERIOUS OUTBREAK AT KAKAHI. (Per Phem Association-.;. TAUMARUNUI, May 18 A disastrous fire broke out early this ■ morning at Kakahi. The fire which | started in E. O'Malley’s Boarding j House (owned by Miss Hnrrod of Auek - i land), next caught Entires’ General j Store, and then spread to the Public ! Hall. After the fire had a substantial j holt! on tho Hall, a small empty shop owned by If. Fraser.was knocked to i pieces by the residents. This proved a | sap over which the fire could not leap to i Everybody s Theatre and a shop belonc- | ing to Eraser, tho only buildings left ! standing in the main street of Kakahi. there is no fire, brigade at Kakahi, and the residents worked strenuously with buckets to suppress the conflagration. ■ Had there been a wind -all the buildings in the street undoubtedly would have been wiped out. The insurances ! are not available. Knhaki, 184 miles south of Auckland I h.y rail, is situated on the Wanganui River, at the junction of the AVhakai papa Hirer.
HO All DING-HOUSE DESTROYED. (Per Press Association ) HASTINGS, May 18. A twelve-roomed boarding-house, in Karamu Road, owned by Mrs E. Phillips and occupied by Mis K. Bedford, was burnt to the ground this morning. Ihe occupants, Mrs Bedford, two young children, and a boarder, escaped only in their night clothes.
PRIVATE RESIDENCE BURNT. (Per Press Association ) GREYMOUTH. May 18. A fire last evening destroyed a thir teen roomed house, at Brunnerton, or copied by -Mr Hothersoll. manager o the New Tyneside Proprietary. Tilt origin of the fire is unknown. Nr water was available. There was a small insurance on the. building, whirl was recently renovated.
