CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION.

The Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union met last night; present—Messrs 8. F. Wilson (president), A. M’Phail. R- Beattie, R. W. Britton, R. H. North. O. S. M‘Cully, W. Maxwell, A. Dey, G. Payne, O. Buchanan, A, Duggan. W. Britten and H. Davis.

Tt was decided to guarantee a payment of 2s 6d for the first treatment of Rugby players receiving attention at the Hospital. _ __ Messrs A. L. Jones. C. Goldstone and w. Round were appointed Junior selectors, and Messrs M. Lyons, G. Kerr and P. Cole Third Grade selector*.

The Auokland Union wrote stating that it would confirm interproTincial dates later. Letters were Received confirming the following dates for interprovincial fixtures August S—South Canterbury, at Timaru. August 9 —Otoaro. at Dunedin. August 13—Southland, at Inveroargill. August 19—Hawke’s Bay, at Christchurch. _ . _ . . September 2—Taranaki, at Ohristohurch. September 16 —Wellington, at Chris churoh. _ , The 'Varsity Club was granted permiaeion to enter a junior* seven-a-side team in a tournament a.i Timaru on June 8. The Belfast Athletic* Club appUed for permission to take up collections at xnatohea in Belfast in aid of the expense of maintaining Sheldon Park. Permission was granted, and it was resolved to ask for details of the proposed expenditure. A caution was administered to a Third Grade player who had been ordered off the field for impertinence to a referee. In this case tne referee attended and expressed the opinion that the player had been sufficiently punished. A Fourth Orade player who had been ordered off for threatening to fight was cautioned. The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote 6tating that it was asking all unions to set aside June 24 as Charity Saturday, when the proceeds of all matches ehould be earmarked for charitable purposes. The allocation of the amounts would be a matter for etch union, but it was suggested that a proportion should be handed to the fund for the blind. The president said that as the suggestion had come from Canterbury, he hoped \hat the province would put up a record by obtaining the assistance of club supporters, particularly the ladiee, in organising a big sale of tiokets. Although the innovation applied only to the present year, it might very well become an annual fixture. Rugby was supported by the public, and the union should show that it was prepared to assist worthy objects. He thought that the charity should be quite undenominational. It was deoided to set aside June 24 as Benefit Saturday, and to circularise clubs asking for their assistance at the same time informing sub-unions of the proposal. The New Zealand Union wrote stating that applications for reinstatement would he reooived up to June 80. Nominations of players for the inter-island match should be lodged by Juno 26. The following gentlemen had been nominated as selectors:—North Island Meesrs Humphries (Taranaki), Griffiths (Wellington) and Nicholson (Auckland); Bouth , Island: Messrs Drake (Canterbury), Stuart (Otago) end one to be selected from the nominees of the Seddon Shield unions. The president announced that Lancaster Bark had been allotted, t-o the Football Association _>n June 10 for the Soccer match between New South Wales and the South Island. The Competitions Committee reported that a New Brighton Third Grade team had been permitted to enter, and would take up the running of the Marista B team, which had withdrawn. The Belfast r.nd North Canterbury Third Grade teams had withdrawn. The oommittee recommended that the Cadet Battalion team should bo withdrawn. The report was adopted. Fines of os were Imposed on the Albion, North Canterbury, Linwood and Marists Clubs for playing unregistered men. The Linwood Club was granted permission to play Springfield at Sheffield next Saturday. It was decided to approach the Lancaster Park Board regarding the encroachment of spectators on the south and west grounds at Lancaster Park. Mr G. W. Aldridge, secretary of the Hnrunui Sub-union, who was present by invitation, addressed the committee regarding the proposal of the Culverden Club to form n sub-union comprising Hanraer, Rotherham, Waikari, Ha warden. Omihi, Culverden and Amberley. Mr Aldridge said that at present the Kaikoura Club had been allowed to draw players from the Kaikoura County, Wainu from the Amuri County, and Cheviot from the Cheviot County. If Culverden. Rotherham and Hanmer were allowed to join a separate sub-union, they would leave Waiau only a small corner of the Amuri j County from which to draw* its players. \ Pome alteration of boundaries would bo of benefit to Rugby in the north. because the great bug-boar to Waiau was the long trip to Kaikoura. The matter would be discussed with Cheviot and Kaikoura, but his idea was that a very compact sub-union could be formed between the Hurunui and Conway. The president said that the Canterbury Union would not take action without jousuiting North Canterbury and Hurunui. A round-table conference might arrive at the greatest good for the greatest mimber, at the some time helping country Rugby generally. It scorned to blxn that the Waiati suggestion was the most feasible. except that it meant pushing Kaikoura further rorth. Mr Aldridge said that if Hanmer. ( ulverdon and Rotherham joined with Waiau Juniors in on internal competition, the game might be greatly benefited. The matter was hold over. SATURDAY'S MATCHES.
