BAD FEELING BETWEEN FARMERS. ACCUSED COMMITTED HEAVY BAIL ALLOWED. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, January 6. The evidence in the Police Court case in which George Devenney was charged with firing a shotgun at "William Griffin Dowling, with intent to murder, disclosed a lengthy bad feeling between the parties, culminating in the shootfollowing the episode of the removal of a coat from a fence. Dowling stated that his and accused’b properties were separated by a chain road. On December 27 accused’s coat was hanging oil tlie fence and witness removed it, droppin- it into accused’s paddock, because it frightened his son’s horse. The next da>* coat was again on the fence. Witness went to Ranfurly and brought back Constable Bandy. The coat was still hanging on the fence, and accused was some distance away, carrying a gun. AYitnes* removed the coat, and accused fired Witness made for his horse, and accu» ed, running towards him, took aim and tired again. Accused called out: “ Ten*. Dowling, I’ll shoot you down.’" or words to that effect. Witness further related how Con stable Bandy fired warning shots till tlie accused put down his gun. The constable keeping accuwed covered secured the gun and discharged it.

To accused’s counsel witness said that so far as lie knew, he did not tear accused’s coat. He did not know the accused’s sheep had been killed by dogs. Witness was not aware that he was reputed to be an Irish republican, nor had he leanings that way.

After the evidence of Constable Bandy accused was committed for trial, bail being allowed in himself for £SIX3, and two sureties of £250 each.
