General Smuts is intervening in the coal strike and endeavouring to secure the reopening of negotiations, with a view to submitting the dispute to arbitration. The o rnen insist that the Chamber of Mines must withdraw all its ultimatums. Tho Government is enforcing the mining regulations, consequently work in all the mines in brought to a standstill. The rail way men have decided not to handle “ black ” coal except on the main lines.
