NEW RAILWAY OPENED.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 6. The AVaiukn-Paerata railway was officially opened to-day by Air Massey. Others present included the Hon J. G. Coates, Sir William Fraser, Sir William Herrios and a number of members of Parliament. There was a crowd of two thousand present to see the Premier drive an engine through a ribbon stretched across the line. In the course of a speech at the opening of the railway, the Hon J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, explained liow the principle of concentration had been decided upon on certain railway lines, thus bringing into use lines on which the capital cost had been heaviest, and where money was lying idle. He emphasised that in the allocation of money due attention would bo given to providing for employment to those out of work. He reiterated the principle of the different departments interested in railway construction—Agriculture. Railways and Public Works—all working in unison, thus ensuring the earliest possible construction of lines.
