FRANCHISE QUESTION.
HITCH IN DRAINAGE LOAN. A hitch in regard to the Christchurch Drainage Board’s proposed new loan was referred to* at last night's meeting of the board. “What is the position? ” asked Mr J. W. Beanland. “We know what was said in the Court, but we seem to be in the dark somewhat. I understood all along that the Act on which we were going to take a poll was a full franchise,, but now we are told by the lawyers that something is wrong with our proposition. I would like an explanation from you why the matter lias been held up.” The chairman (Mr H. J. Otley) said it had been decided than as objections were being raised the matter had better he held up. It was under consideration at present. He had seen the board’s solicitors that day. The report on the matter was not quite ready. No time at all had been wasted. No doubt something would be ready to lay before the next meeting of the board or before that. If before, ho would call a special meeting at once.
