Since the rat-catching campaign started on© local authority south of Christchurch has paid out rewards for 416, easily a record for Canterbury. This council has now decided to increase the price from 3d to 6d, so that even greater activity can b© expected on the part of small boys, fox terriers and pea rifles. No tally has been kept of th© number of rats caught at Lyttelton, but, for a time at least, the results were quite satisfactory. It would be in the interests of public health if all local bodies redoubled their efforts at rat-catching. Plague is menacing a’ wider area in Queensland.
