LATE BISHOP NEVILL.

EULOGY BY REV W. HARPER. At the Anglican Cathedral last night the Very Rev Walter Harper, during his sermon at th© service celebrating All Saints Day. said that that day they celebrated also the fortieth anniversary of th© consecration of the nave of the Cathedral. He well remembered the occasion, as he had the honour of being chaplain to the first Bishop of Christchurch. Some years passed and the chancel as it now stands was consecrated by the late Bishop Nevill. Bishop Nevill carried out his work with zeal. He had many difficulties to contend with, for the diocese of Dunedin had not the advantage of large endowments such as they had in Canterbury, and the Anglicans were in a minority, for the Presbyterian Church had the largest number of adherents. Bishop Nevill was a scholarly man of no mean intellectual attainments. He had been offered the position of Warden of a Cambridge College, where he would have had seclusion for the quiet pursuit of knowledge, but he preferred to remain with his New Zealand people. H© was a thoughtful preacher, sometimes too deep a thinker for the average congregation. He was an affectionate and steadfast friend of the speaker’.: father. Bishop Harper. With all hi:* limitations—all have limitations —he did a good work for the Church in Otago and for .the Church of the province of New Zealand.
