WORK IN THE HOUSE.

NO HURRY AT PREBENT. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, September 27. PLENTY OF PAPER IN HOUSE. If there is a shortage of paper at present there were no signs in the House of Representatives of a shortage of papers. There were heaps of them, all tied with blue ribbon, and mostly formal, differing mainly in their technical classification, as “ According to Act,” “By Command,” or “By Leave of the House.” They called for no debate, and none was forthcoming. The member who did the most talking upon them was the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon W. Downie Stewart), who had to read the titles. Towards the conclusion he found it necessary to group papers and get rid of them more speedily. Ai>art from thus making a fair start in the compilation of appendices to journals, the House did little in the afternoon. ADDRESS-IN-REPLY DEBATE. In the evening the Address-in-Reply debate was opened by Mr Dixon (Patea). He spoke clearly, and when he had finished putting on record two long newspaper eulogies of Mr Massey to some purpose, he was followed by Mr Burnett (Temuka), who discussed several South Island grievances and then, concluded his speech somewhat abruptly. The Leader of the Opposition moved the adjournment of the debate. “ GREAT MEN ” OF AMERICA. A picture of what might be done by promoting the unity of the two great English-speaking peoples was being drawn by Mr Dixon (Patea) in the House of Representatives. - Mr Dixon was eloquently advocating the teaching of American history in a sympathetic form in the public schools of this country. If British history were similarly taught in America it would be for the good of both races. He believed that now British hoys knew more of American history than American boys knew of British history. They knew of great men of America and their -work.

Just then a voice from the hack benches was heard to remark, “ Charlie Chaplin.”
