The Western Counties Shipping Company, Ltd., of Cardiff, Wales, which was floated during the recent shipping boom, has come to an unfortunate end. In May last Mr Justice P. O. Lawrence, in the Chancery Division, appointed a. receiver and manager of the company, on behalf of the debenture holders. The company, says “ Fairp’ay,” of London, of June 2, has a paid-up capital of £2.250,000, divided among about 17,000 shareholders; the sum of £600,000 is owing to debenture-holders, end about £375,000 is due to mortgagees on the Sutherland fleet, who have already taken possession. The company acquired the Moor Line and Sutherland fleets at the end of 1919 and beginning of 1920, at prices which worked out at about £23 a ton for steamers averaging about thirteen years of age. In the prospectus, which was issued in March last year, inviting subscriptions for £1,000,000 further capital, it was stated that the 180,922 ton 9 deadweight acquired by the company, and which had cost it about £4,021,525, was valued at £4,362,000, or £26 a ton deadweight, and the gross earnings were estimated at £206,473 a month. The directors anticipated a profit of £1,039,284 for the year, which, after providing for interest on the borrowed moneys, and 20 per cent dividend to the shareholders, was to leave £206,000 for depreciation, and £291,284 for reserve. The directors did not anticipate that the excess profits duty would be • increased to 60 per cent ; that a corporation tax of 5 per cent would be imposed; that they would lose tens of thousands of pounds through defaulting charterers, and that their steamers would have to bo laid up at great expense; nor did they expect that the value of shipping would drop 70 or 80 per cent within a year or so.
