ABROGATION OF “ GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT ** URGED*. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. WASHINGTON, August 3. It is understood that the Japanese Exclusion League of California has filed a brief with Mr C. E. Hughes, the Secretary of State, petitioning for the abrogation of the “ Gentleman’s -Viireement ** with Japan, and declaring that no self-respecting world Power should have made such a pact. The letter is signed by Californian Senators and Congressmen accompanied by a brief generally approving of the contents and inviting serious consideration hv Mr Hughes. The brief states “To-day the intelligent whito business and professional labouring elements which until a few months ago were derided concerning warnings oi' tho Japanese peril are openly, secretly, directly and through commissions, petitioning for protection.” The brief adds “ A treaty of settlement with Japan would be a violation and an invasion of the States’ rights.”
