AVON IMPROVEMENT,

FREE HAND FOR LOCAL BODIES.

A distinct step towards the realisation of some scheme of river improvement was taken to-day by the Lyttelton Harbour Board in adopting a resolution proposed by Dr Thacker and seconded bv Mr H. B. Sorenson:— 0 11 That • the Lyttelton Harbour Board is willing to give permission to the Christchurch City Council and adjoining boroughs to improve the River Avon and Estuary and Sumner Bar ; any works to be carried out to be subject to the approval of this board.”

The motion was favourably recommended by the Harbour Improvement Committee, to which it had been referred.

Mr VC. J. Walter opposed the report, maintaining that dual control in the low’er reaches would block progress. The board should spend money on clearing out the lower reaches. Mr H. T. Armstrong said that the motion seemed to bo contrary to the decision come tn by the conference. Tho motion would hand over to other bodies the work that ought to be done by the board. The report was adopted.
