The Star. WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 1921 SCHOOL OF FORESTRY.

It has been apparent for some time past that Canterbury’a claims for the location of the School of Forestry in Christchurch were being strenuousely resisted bv Auckland. The matter has been brought prominently before the people of Canterbury, chiefly through the efforts of the Progress League. A very strong case has been made out in support of Canterbury’s claims, but it would be too much to hope that Auckland would be convinced. The northern province, learning that Canterbury proposed to interview the Acting-Prime Minister, became violently agitated. Its members of Parliament were advised to get on the housetops and let their voices be hoard. The Auckland University Council, however, had a trump card up its academical sleeve, and it played it at the right moment. The Registrar sent a cablegram to Mr Massey breaking the news that designing Oantffrbury was pressing for an immediate decision, and imploring him to delay matters until his return. The cablegram had a sting in its tail.

“ All members of Parliament in this province,” it said, “ are anxious that the School should be establshed in Auckland-” Lid Mr Massey inform the Registrar that he had left behind him in New Zealand a Cabinet which lie could trust to do the right thing by the country? The public might reasonably have expected such a reply, but the University Council evidently knew Mr Massey better. The Prime Minister was responsive to the appeal from his outraged supporters—and “ the question of the location of the Forestry School has been postponed till my return.” What Sir Francis Bell thinks of the situation we do not know, but it is not difficult to surmise. A more flagrant appeal to parochialism has seldom met with such a compliant and complacent reception.
