FALSE CHEQUES.

MONEY LENDER AND OTMERS DEFRAUDED. OFFENDER PLEADS GUILTY How a nionej'-lender and others were defrauded by means of false cheques was told before Mr J- Clarke, J.P., and Air C. Hill, J.P., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. MonJfagu Henry Pennycuick was charged with forgery and uttering. James Scott, licensee of the New Zealander Hotel, said that accused asked him toi cash a cheque for £3 for him. It purported to be. signed by ”P. Perry. After questioning him about it, witness cashed the cheque, and refused to take exchange on it. The Union Bank of Australia, returned the cheque marked “No account.” Detective-Sergeant Uhbson said that accused said to him : “ J. wish to make this thing as light as possible ns 1 am more of a fool than a. criminal.” He then told witness that all tho cheques were fictitious. James Raymond Franks, licensee of the Prince of Wales Hotel, told a similar story in respect of a cheque presented to him by accused. Percy Herbert Hayutird, a. confectioner, of Manchester Street, said that accused was in the hajrit of coming into his shop and buying sweets. He gave him tivo cheque forms at his request, accused signing “ I*. Perry” on the butts. Cecil Horatio CresswclL in charge of the People’s Palace, said that accused had been boarding there since last March. Accused tendered him a cheque for £ll 10s, purporting to he signed by Charles M. Blake, and he cashed it for The Bank of New Zealand returned it marked “No account.” Accused said that ho got tho cheque from his employer, hut if it was not good he would; “fix him up air right.” Accused was commttt-cd to the Supreme Court for sentience.
