Ibis is the fifth week of the coni strike, but a settlement still seems afar off. though powerful influences are working bringing the miners and owners together. It is suggested that Mr iyowther, ex-Speakcr of tho House of Commons, should act as arbitrator. The Government view is that there must be a ballot of all miners forthwith. especially a 9 the majority of the Executive are known to favour the adceptance of the £10,C«X),000 offer. In the meanwhile the trains have been reduced to half the normal number on Wednesdays*
